Back Mezha Expert Calls Leipzig Airport Drone Incident a Warning of Russia's Hybrid Threat
A device near a Ukrainian transport aircraft and a second drone encounter exposed vulnerabilities that German officials can no longer overlook.
As reported by the online media outlet Ukrinform .
Russia’s readiness to act aggressively and violently on German territory has been demonstrated by operations, so the incident at Leipzig Airport should be regarded as a serious signal in the context of the Russian hybrid threat.
Tim Stuchtey, director of the Brandenburg Institute for Society and Security (BIGS), said in a to the correspondent:
“Russia demonstrated, at the latest with the state- assassination in Kleiner Tiergarten park, that it is prepared to act aggressively and violently on German territory.”
Commenting on the incident involving a combat drone at Leipzig Airport, the expert cautioned against prematurely assigning responsibility for the event to Russia before the official investigation is complete, but stressed that such a theory “is, of course, already highly plausible.”
“In any case, the incident bears clear signs of a hybrid attack: a civilian target is attacked using means whose origin is difficult to establish; disruption of operations, the creation of uncertainty, and the testing of our protection mechanisms are all part of the impact.”
The expert also pointed to the risks facing facilities connected with support for Ukraine. “Facilities that are directly or indirectly connected with support for Ukraine are particularly vulnerable,” Stuchtey emphasized.
“Facilities that are directly or indirectly connected with support for Ukraine are particularly vulnerable.”
In his view, the incident should serve as an impetus for significantly strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure. “This incident must therefore be treated as a warning signal calling for much more robust protection of critical infrastructure,” he remarked.
“This incident must therefore be treated as a warning signal calling for much more robust protection of critical infrastructure.”
Stuchtey also drew attention to the limited ability of law enforcement agencies to provide continuous protection for all potentially vulnerable facilities, and therefore called for critical infrastructure operators and private security services to be more actively involved in detecting and countering drones.
“The state’s monopoly on the use of force must not be diluted. However, the state must create a security architecture in which the police, intelligence services, Bundeswehr, operators, and specialized service providers can act in a coordinated manner.”
According to the expert, a clear legal and technical foundation is needed: legislative powers, technical standards, certification, and strict government oversight.
“This, however, requires clear legislative powers, technical standards, certification, and strict government oversight.”
The expert emphasized the need to develop a broader system of cooperation among all the responsible structures – the police, intelligence services, Bundeswehr, and private security providers – to respond effectively to threats of this kind.
According to the federal police, a drone carrying an explosive device was detected at Leipzig/Halle Airport near a Ukrainian An-124 transport aircraft and was neutralized by specialists. Due to the airport’s closure, several flights were diverted, while one cargo aircraft, at an altitude of several hundred meters, collided with another drone and landed safely in Hanover.
Alexander Dobrindt called the event “a hybrid attack scenario,” while emphasizing that the possible perpetrator has not yet been identified.
In conclusion, the expert emphasizes the importance of coordinated action among the authorities, security agencies, and the private sector in countering threats of this kind, as well as the need to further develop the critical infrastructure security system.
