National Bureau of Investigation launches preliminary investigation into unauthorized intelligence activities in April

ISTANBUL (AA) - The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced Wednesday that it is investigating a suspected espionage case, according to the Yle broadcaster.

The bureau told Yle that it launched a preliminary investigation into unauthorized intelligence activities in April, primarily focusing on a suspected crime that occurred in Finland.

The broadcaster said unauthorized intelligence activities may involve obtaining defense or security information to benefit or harm a foreign country, noting that espionage conducted in Finland against a non-Finnish target could be considered likely to endanger foreign relations.

The NBI also noted that it launched preliminary investigations into two other suspected crimes of treason this year.

In January, it reportedly opened an investigation into the suspected disclosure of a security secret. It is also probing a data breach targeting the state information and communications technology center, Valtori, that involves suspected espionage.
