TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida highway safety officials say an international cybercriminal organization accessed data after exploiting a local police employee’s login credentials that were stored improperly on a personal device.
The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Department said it learned of the breach on Sept. 4, 2026. The agency said the breach was quickly mitigated and that no further breach has occurred or is ongoing.
An investigation found that a criminal actor took advantage of a single Plant City Police Department user’s credentials that were improperly housed on the employee’s personal electronic device, according to the department.
FLHSMV said it provided the required notice of the security breach to the Office of the Attorney General pursuant to section 501.171, Florida Statutes. The agency also said it is partnering with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in its response.
Because the case remains an ongoing criminal investigation, the department said additional information will be released at an appropriate time in the future.
