### How Solar Flares Helped Understand Gravity At first glance, there seems to be nothing in common between solar flares and gravity. However, physicists have discovered that the mathematical patterns describing these phenomena may have unexpected similarities. The study was conducted by Luca Comisso from Columbia University in the U.S. and Felipe Asenjo from Adolfo Ibáñez University in Chile. The starting point for the scientists was a well-known physical process — magnetic reconnection. It occurs in plasma, which is a gas containing electrically charged particles. Plasma makes up a significant portion of the visible matter in the universe, including stars. Magnetic fields in plasma can stretch, twist, and store energy. Under certain conditions, the configuration of the magnetic field changes dramatically, resulting in the release of the stored energy. This mechanism plays a crucial role in the occurrence of powerful solar flares. > "Magnetic reconnection occurs when field lines in a certain configuration break and reconnect in a different configuration," Comisso explained. According to him, as a result, the energy of the magnetic field is transferred to plasma particles, causing intense energetic processes. ### Gravity May Have Its Own "Sheets" of Field The scientists wondered: could something similar happen with the gravitational field? The answer turned out to be related to the peculiarities of Einstein's general theory of relativity. Unlike magnetic fields, which are typically depicted using field lines in three-dimensional space, gravity is described through four-dimensional spacetime. Therefore, instead of familiar lines, the researchers consider two-dimensional mathematical structures that they call "sheets" of the field. > "Since spacetime is four-dimensional rather than three-dimensional, gravity suggests the existence of something like sheets of the field instead of field lines," Comisso clarified. For clarity, he suggested imagining a multitude of lines combined into a single surface. Importantly, this refers not to actual physical sheets existing in space, but to a mathematical way of describing the structure of the gravitational field. The researchers showed that under certain conditions, the connections between such structures can change. They named this process gravitational reconnection. According to the proposed theoretical model, such a restructuring can be accompanied by the transfer of energy from the gravitational field to matter. ### What Was Hidden in Einstein's Equations The main feature of the discovery is that the scientists did not create a new theory of gravity. Instead, they rephrased the already existing equations of general relativity using different mathematical variables. This approach allowed them to find similarities with equations describing the behavior of plasma, as well as to identify additional constraints on possible changes in spacetime. The work continues earlier research by Comisso and Asenjo, conducted in collaboration with Maricarmen Winkler. > "Einstein's equations contain constraints on how spacetime can evolve that are not immediately apparent," Asenjo said. According to him, identifying these properties allows for a better understanding of the fundamental rules that govern the process of gravitational reconnection. Comisso added that some consequences of physical equations become apparent only after changing their mathematical form. In other words, the researchers discovered not an error or a gap in Einstein's theory, but properties that were already contained in its equations but were not obvious in the conventional way of writing them. ### What Do Black Hole Collisions Have to Do with It One area where the discovery may prove useful, the scientists say, is in the study of black hole mergers. When two black holes approach and merge, spacetime experiences extremely strong curvatures. Such events are accompanied by the emergence of gravitational waves — propagating disturbances in spacetime. These are recorded by special observatories, including the American LIGO. To predict the characteristics of these waves, physicists use complex computer calculations that model the behavior of spacetime during the collision. However, such calculations require significant resources. The discovered mathematical constraints could potentially help scientists determine some properties of the gravitational field without calculating the entire process in all its details. > "Even without conducting a full calculation, we know that spacetime must behave in a certain way, that it must satisfy these constraints," Comisso explained. This could be useful in developing and testing models of black hole mergers. ### The Discovery Currently Exists Only in Theory Despite the unusual conclusions, the scientists emphasize that gravitational reconnection remains a theoretical mechanism for now. The study does not prove that such a process actually occurs during black hole collisions or other astrophysical events. It is also unknown how much energy it can transfer to matter and under what conditions it may occur in nature. The stage of research will be related to searching for physical situations in which the predicted mechanism could manifest. An additional question is whether it can create features in gravitational waves that can be detected by modern or future detectors. If the existence of gravitational reconnection can be confirmed, it may complement scientists' understanding of how energy is redistributed in conditions of extremely strong gravity. At the same time, the discovery itself already shows that even more than a century after the creation of general relativity, unexpected mathematical patterns continue to be found in Einstein's equations.

What should you do if, after the death of a loved one, their page on , Instagram, or TikTok continues to exist? Can you demand the removal of photos, posts, and other personal data, citing European legislation on personal data protection? The Data State Inspectorate of Latvia (DSI) explains that such questions are regularly received by the institution. However, the capabilities of the state supervisory authority in such cases are limited, reports the LETA agency. ### Why GDPR Does Not Protect the Data of the Deceased The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union regulates the processing of personal data of living individuals. Its scope does not extend to information the deceased. This means that the Data State Inspectorate is not authorized to assess the processing of personal information of a deceased person or to demand its removal based on GDPR. However, the absence of such protection does not mean that deleting an account is impossible. The relevant decision is simply made according to the rules of the specific social network. ### How to Delete a Deceased Person's Page on If it is necessary to delete a deceased relative's account on , you should the platform directly. Information the procedure is available in the 'Help' section, which provides instructions for submitting a request to delete the account of a deceased family member. The applicant may need to confirm the fact of the profile owner's death and their right to make such a request. ### Instagram Allows Account Deletion or Memorialization On Instagram, relatives can also submit a request for the deletion of a deceased person's page. To submit a request, you need to log into your own Instagram account and follow the appropriate procedure in the platform's help section. At the same time, Instagram offers another option — converting the profile to a memorial status. Such an account can be preserved as a digital memory of the person, without the need to completely delete previously published photos and posts. ### What to Do with a TikTok Account In the case of TikTok, relatives are advised to the social network's support service through the Legal section. In the request, you should explain the situation and ask for the possibility of deleting the deceased user's account. The further course of action depends on the requirements of the platform itself. ### What Documents May Be Required According to the Data State Inspectorate's clarification, when contacting a social network, it is important to provide enough information for the administration to identify which account is being referred to. In particular, it is recommended to specify: - A link to the deceased person's profile or their username. - A clear request for account deletion. - If necessary, documents confirming the death of the page owner. - If the platform requires it, proof of kinship or the right to act on behalf of the deceased. The specific list of documents and review times are determined by the social network itself. Thus, there is no universal procedure for deleting the digital profiles of deceased individuals. Relatives need to each platform separately where the person had an account. The Data State Inspectorate emphasizes that such requests do not fall within its competence, as the European GDPR regulation does not apply to the personal data of the deceased.
