Hackers broke into Denmark's national registry and gained access to personal information on millions of people, the digital affairs ministry said Monday.
"The administration of the national registry (CPR) has found that unauthorised individuals obtained illegal access in particular to the names, addresses, and CPR numbers of around 8.8 million registered people," including those who have died or emigrated, the ministry said in a press release , referring to Denmark's social security numbers.
In the press release, Egelund urged people registered in Denmark to find out more at sikkerdigital.dk and also to be particularly careful never to give out passwords or other confidential information in connection with telephone inquiries, or inquiries via e-mails, even if the recipient knows their name, address and CPR number.
The CPR administration has stopped the company's access to the system, is working with specialists and authorities to map the course of events, and has reported the incident to the Danish Data Protection Authority and the police.
