IEA warns EU faces winter with lowest gas reserves on record
Europe is entering winter with historically low gas reserves and cannot withstand further supply shocks, Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), tells Al Jazeera.
Europe, he said, is particularly vulnerable because of its heavy reliance on Middle Eastern fuel and has been severely impacted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the US-Israel war on Iran.
“The best day for a ceasefire would have been yesterday,” Birol said.
“Normally before the winter, European countries have a lot of gas stocks, but the gas stocks we have while we are entering this winter are much lower than historical averages.”
Birol warned: “Life will not be easy for Europe this year and also year.”
“I think if we have a harsh winter, we may see higher prices of natural gas in Europe,” he added.
Araghchi calls US-Israel military relations ‘parasitic’
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has condemned military relations between the United States and Israel as “parasitic”.
In a post on X, Araghchi claimed the US has spent “$11 BILLION in taxpayer money on missile defense for Israel” over the past three years, adding that Washington has “fired more interceptors defending Israel than Israel has”.
The remarks come less than two weeks before Americans vote in congressional midterm elections. Polling has indicated significant public frustration over Washington’s involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts.

live-orange Six Israeli soldiers wounded in West Bank shooting near Hebron Israeli medical sources are saying that six Israeli soldiers have been injured; two of them are in critical condition. Israeli sources are claiming that Palestinians were driving a car with an Israeli licence plate before shooting towards the soldiers near a military checkpoint. The checkpoint is one of many surrounding Hebron’s besieged people. According to these sources, the exchange of fire lasted for 20 minutes, which complicated the process of evacuating the soldiers to receive medical help. Usually, in cases where Israeli forces even suspect an attack, they immediately shoot Palestinians and they deny them any medical help. This has been condemned by many organisations saying that they do not give them the right to any judicial process or any medical help in these cases. In this case, we might be looking at an attack and not an alleged one, but that remains to be confirmed and seen in the hours. This is coming at a time of great tension, not just before the Israeli elections, but there has been a ramp-up in attacks by settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
