Ireland and UK Conduct Joint Exercise for Subsea Cable Attack Response On September 30, 2026, Ireland and Britain held their first joint exercise, named Eastern Pearl, to test response strategies for potential attacks on subsea cables in the Irish Sea. The exercise simulated disruptions to multiple communication cables vital for telecommunications and public utilities. Officials from both countries participated, focusing on coordination and information sharing in response to a realistic attack scenario. Concerns have been raised about the vulnerability of these cables, particularly in light of increased Russian naval activity in European waters. The exercise is part of a broader framework established earlier this year to enhance cooperation between the two nations regarding critical infrastructure security. Patrick O'Donovan, Ireland's Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, emphasized the importance of strong partnerships in safeguarding shared resources. The exercise involved various government departments and military observers, marking a significant step in joint preparedness efforts. 6 sources 45
