Back Asahi Japan seeking quick methods to replace disabled defense satellites
Japan is exploring ways to launch rockets that can immediately replace defense satellites disabled by attacks, interference or other disruptions.
“Rapidly restoring capabilities is a critical national security challenge if some of the satellites we use are lost, including during a contingency,” Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said at an Oct. 9 news conference.
The Defense Ministry will seek proposals from private companies through December on how such rockets could be manufactured and launched.
With Japan facing a shortage of domestic launch sites, the ministry will explore options that do not rely on existing facilities, including launches from vehicles, ships and aircraft.
It is also considering the use of 3D printers and other technologies to produce components quickly.
The use of Japanese technology and industrial capabilities will be among the criteria for evaluating proposals, as the ministry also seeks to strengthen the country’s space industry.
The project has been allocated 70 million yen ($442,000) under the initial fiscal 2026 budget. The ministry plans to select a contractor in February 2027 and compile the study’s findings by March 2028.
The ministry and the Self-Defense Forces have been strengthening Japan’s defense capabilities in space. They operate defense communications satellites for military command and control and are building a constellation of small satellites for target detection.
Japan also plans to launch a Space Domain Awareness satellite during the current fiscal year to monitor objects and activity in space.
