Back Thestatesman J&K Police book Army officer's wife in suspected espionage case; alleged China links under scrutiny
Jammu and Kashmir Police registered a case against the wife of a serving Army officer for allegedly gathering and sharing sensitive information with foreign intelligence operatives, including individuals suspected of having links with China.
The woman, who hails from Telangana and is currently living with her husband in Jammu, was questioned by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank officer after an FIR was registered at Gandhi Nagar police station on Friday, October 16, media reports said.
She has been booked under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, she has not been arrested, and preliminary inquiries have not established that she passed on any sensitive information to foreign operatives, sources cited in the reports said.
Investigators are scrutinising her research-related activities to determine whether they were used to obtain information with potential security implications. Police are also examining whether any documents or other material were communicated to suspected foreign intelligence operatives.
Some reports alleged that foreign contacts initially approached the woman through professional or academic interactions before steering conversations toward defence-related subjects.
The police said an investigation has been initiated to verify the allegations and establish the facts. The evidence, if any, of communication with foreign entities and the nature of the information potentially involved are yet to be conclusively determined.
The case has renewed attention on suspected attempts by foreign intelligence networks to cultivate individuals through online interactions and professional approaches. Such methods have featured in several espionage investigations involving defence personnel and others with potential access to sensitive information.
The allegations against the woman remain unproven, and the investigation is continuing. However, when contacted, SSP Jammu Joginder Singh declined to on the matter.
Earlier, a 44-year-old serving Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander was arrested in May 2026 on allegations of sharing sensitive defence information with a woman suspected of working for Pakistani intelligence. Details of the case emerged publicly in August, when Delhi Police confirmed that a charge sheet had been filed against the officer.
The officer was arrested on May 30, 2026, following a complaint from the IAF. The force’s intelligence apparatus reportedly monitored his activities before referring the matter to Delhi Police. He was booked under the Official Secrets Act and subsequently remanded to judicial custody at Tihar Jail.
