Not just movies, even the censor board is not immune to piracy and leaks. In what could be a major data breach, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly fallen prey to security attacks as the official portal e-Cinepramaan got compromised and exposed confidential documents and certification records for more than 500 movie titles.

What is more shocking is that the serious security lapse reportedly leaked unreleased movie scripts, cut orders, and formal distribution contracts through its official online system. Film producers and industry experts are deeply worried this sudden exposure of sensitive business data and creative content.

The leaked files were allegedly accessed through the government’s digital portal called e-Cinepramaan, which filmmakers use to apply for movie certification before theatrical release. According to reports, the confidential files remained exposed online for several days via digital archiving platforms before authorities took notice.

While the actual video files of the movies were not leaked, the exposure of original scripts and censor details creates big privacy issues.

Apart from scripts, private distribution agreements and licensing fee details for various domestic and international film projects have also been made public. Contracts containing revenue sharing terms, intellectual property clauses, and trade secrets were accidentally made visible to the public domain.

The CBFC stated that it has launched an official investigation and started a complete security audit of the e-Cinepramaan portal. However, many filmmakers fear that the leak of sensitive information pertaining to unreleased movies could impact the box office prospects and affect the theatrical revenues.
