Montenegro police, FBI arrest Iranian wanted by US for hacking

BELGRADE, June 26 (Reuters) - Montenegrin police and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested an Iranian national suspected of hacking attacks that damaged U.S. infrastructure to the tune of $3.4 billion, Montenegrin police said.

The 39-year-old man, with dual Iranian and Turkish citizenship, is sought by the Southern District Court in New York on charges including conspiracy to commit computer fraud, hacking, and identity theft.

He was arrested in the Adriatic coastal resort of Kotor, Montenegro’s police directorate said on Thursday.

“From 2013 onward, … he carried out massive hacking attacks … targeting more than 150 universities in the United States, causing damage estimated at over $3.4 billion,” it added in a statement.

The case will now go to a High Court judge in Montenegro’s capital of Podgorica for extradition proceedings, the police added.

The acquired data, as well as access to compromised university accounts, were used for the benefit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other Iranian entities, including universities, it said.

Iran and the IRGC have a long history of state- cyber operations targeting the United States, often linked to IRGC.

In April, U.S. cybersecurity, law enforcement, and ‌intelligence agencies warned an escalation of Iranian hacking campaigns targeting equipment across critical U.S. infrastructure.

BELGRADO, 26 giugno (Reuters) - La polizia montenegrina e l’FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) statunitense hanno arrestato un cittadino iraniano sospettato di attacchi hacker che hanno causato danni alle infrastrutture statunitensi per un valore di 3,4 miliardi di dollari, ha dichiarato la polizia montenegrina.

L’uomo di 39 anni, in possesso della doppia cittadinanza iraniana e turca, è ricercato dal Tribunale del Distretto Meridionale di New York con l’accusa, tra le altre, di associazione a delinquere finalizzata alla frode informatica, hacking e furto d’identità.

È stato arrestato nella località turistica costiera adriatica di Kotor, ha dichiarato giovedì la direzione della polizia montenegrina.

«A partire dal 2013, … ha sferrato massicci attacchi hacker … prendendo di mira oltre 150 università negli Stati Uniti, causando danni stimati in oltre 3,4 miliardi di dollari», ha aggiunto in un comunicato.

Il caso passerà ora a un giudice dell’Alta Corte nella capitale del Montenegro, Podgorica, per il procedimento di estradizione, ha aggiunto la polizia.

I dati acquisiti, così come l’accesso agli account universitari compromessi, sono stati utilizzati a vantaggio del Corpo delle Guardie Rivoluzionarie Islamiche (IRGC) e di altre entità iraniane, comprese le università, ha precisato.

L’Iran e il Corpo delle Guardie Rivoluzionarie Islamiche (IRGC) hanno una lunga storia di operazioni informatiche sponsorizzate dallo Stato e dirette contro gli Stati Uniti, spesso collegate all’IRGC.

Ad aprile, le agenzie statunitensi di sicurezza informatica, delle forze dell’ordine e di intelligence hanno lanciato degli avvertimenti riguardo a un’escalation delle campagne di hacking iraniane mirate alle apparecchiature delle infrastrutture critiche degli Stati Uniti.
