Nearly 4,000 Bitcoins worth $320 million vanished, hackers left behind a mysterious message.

Liquid Network, a Bitcoin-based payment network, has confirmed that approximately 4,000 Bitcoin (equivalent to $320 million) were withdrawn from the Liquid Federation alliance wallet.

According to Reuters, on September 6th, Liquid Network – a payment and settlement network built on the Bitcoin platform – announced that approximately 4,000 Bitcoins, worth nearly $320 million, had been withdrawn from the system's consortium wallets in a cyberattack.

An unverified OP_RETURN message reads: "We are white-hat hackers. us on the blockchain."

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Liquid Network stated: "Self-proclaimed white-hat hackers have withdrawn approximately 4,000 out of a total of 4,200 Bitcoin stored in the Liquid Federation wallet."

Liquid Federation is an alliance of over 80 businesses operating in the Bitcoin sector, responsible for operating and securing the Liquid Network.

Immediately after the incident, Liquid Network temporarily suspended all new transactions and issued an apology: "Liquid wallets will be affected, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience."

According to this network, the entire amount was withdrawn through SideSwap – a settlement platform authorized to process withdrawal requests from the system.

Both Liquid Network and SideSwap assert that the security keys used in the withdrawal process have not been compromised or leaked.

Commenting on the incident, cryptocurrency analyst DBCrypto stated: "This amount of coins was not moved elsewhere but remained on the Bitcoin network and did not pass through any coin mixing services."

This pattern resembles a white-hat hacker's withdrawal to protect assets rather than a typical theft."

However, he also argued that the incident raised serious questions the network's security: "Either 11 out of 15 supervisory parties approved the transaction, or the whitelist, which was designed to prevent this very scenario, was rendered ineffective. Either way, Liquid has little excuse."

Blockstream, the developer of Liquid Network, later confirmed that the L-BTC (the representative version of Bitcoin that operates on the Liquid Network) in the aforementioned transaction was generated from a vulnerability in the Elements software, and not due to a compromised private key.
