People interested in a cyber career with the Defense Department can now apply for paid yearlong apprenticeship positions.
The office of the chief information officer launched the program Monday.
“This groundbreaking initiative represents a critical step in forging a new generation of elite cyber professionals dedicated to defending the nation’s digital frontlines and supporting the warfighter,” the Pentagon said in a statement .
It’s designed as a pilot program to develop and employ cyber professionals within the department.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years old. They may be currently enrolled in high school or college, or may be recent graduates from an accredited educational institution or certificate program within the last two years — or six years for veterans.
While there is no education qualification or prior cyber security background requirement, those interested must be able to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
Apprentices will receive $22,584 in the training period where they will receive education involving online learning, hands-on labs and on-the-job training.
At the end of the 12 months, they could graduate with industry certifications, according to the job posting .
