North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles off its eastern coast on Monday, according to military officials in South Korea and Japan, marking the latest escalation in a series of reciprocal weapons demonstrations across the Korean Peninsula, says Al Jazeera .

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff reported that at least one missile was launched from the Pyongyang area and traveled more than 900 kilometers before falling into the sea. Japanese defense officials confirmed that at least two missiles were detected flying on irregular trajectories, suggesting the potential testing of advanced hypersonic propulsion systems.

The missile tests follow closely on the heels of military maneuvers by South Korea, where President Lee Jae Myung recently oversaw his country’s inaugural test-firing of a domestic hypersonic missile.

Defense analysts view Pyongyang’s latest launches as a direct reaction to Seoul’s technological showcase, as both nations race to strengthen surprise-strike capabilities and overcome regional missile defense systems. Security officials in Seoul condemned the North’s repeated launches, noting that the weapons tests violate standing United Nations Security Council resolutions aimed at curbing nuclear and ballistic missile proliferation.

Geopolitical friction along the border has reached heightened levels following recent incidents, including a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone that injured South Korean military personnel and drew demands for a formal apology from Pyongyang.

Despite efforts by the South Korean government to establish preliminary diplomatic channels and encourage renewed dialogue between North Korea and the United States, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has maintained a firm stance. The regime continues to accelerate its weapons development programs while insisting that Washington lift sanctions and dismantle its hostile foreign policy framework before any meaningful denuclearization negotiations can resume.
