Oneonta city schools will be closed Friday, Oct. 23 and Monday, Oct. 26 as district officials and staff react to a cyberattack that was discovered Thursday, Oct. 22.
According to a letter to parents from Schools Superintendent Thomas F. Brindley, the incident was identified as a ransomware attack.
Brindley declined to on what data was affected; the full extent of the incident and its impact is not known. He did say local, state and federal authorities are investigating the incident.
District staff have received training for such incidents and are following a checklist of protocols, he said.
"We'll get through it," he said. "We just need time to sort this out, and we'll be ready to greet our kids back to school on Tuesday."
The letter outlined a revised schedule:
* Friday, Oct. 23: School will be closed for students and staff.
* Monday, Oct. 26: School will be closed for students. Staff will hold a district conference day to plan and prepare for students to return.
* Tuesday, Oct. 27: Regular school day.
All day BOCES students will attend their programs as regularly scheduled Friday and Monday. Students attending morning or afternoon BOCES programs will not attend their programs Friday or Monday.
Athletic events and practices will continue Friday and Monday.
