Russia arrests Japanese journalist Sakhalin region on suspicion of espionage
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on Tuesday said it arrested a Japanese journalist in Sakhalin region on suspicion of espionage, state news agency Tass reported.
The FSB alleged that the correspondent for the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk bureau of Japanese newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun collected and stored information on Russia’s defense capabilities for Japanese intelligence, claiming the information could be used against the country's security.
The FSB said it opened a criminal case against the journalist, and Moscow’s Lefortovo District Court ordered his arrest as investigation continued.
