Scattered Spider Hacker Pleads Guilty to $8 Million Crypto Theft Tyler Robert Buchanan, a 24-year-old from Scotland, pleaded guilty in the U.S. to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, linked to a scheme that stole at least $8 million in cryptocurrency. His involvement with the Scattered Spider cybercrime group included executing SMS phishing attacks targeting employees of various companies. These attacks, conducted between September 2021 and April 2023, utilized deceptive text messages to obtain sensitive information, leading to SIM-swapping attacks that compromised victims' accounts. The group targeted a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, entertainment, and cryptocurrency platforms.
