School investigates data breach after parent receives files on pupils

Walesonline • June 9, 2026

A secondary school in Wales is conducting an investigation following an apparent data breach which was reported by a parent over the weekend.

Ysgol John Bright in Llandudno confirmed it was looking into the incident. Parent Rob Buglass, who had a pupil at the school , said he received multiple files after submitting a request for information held by the school.

He had sought to view any data they held relating to himself, his wife and their son. He said he had waited two months for a response following a dispute with the school.

He added: "As you can imagine I received many files. One file with 162 pages had 17 pages with the names of 59 different kids names mentioned I counted. Many known to us."

It is understood that all of the information relates to year nine pupils, North Wales Live reports.

He said it included teachers' pupils, with some of those remarks being negative. He added: "The issue is none of the 17 pages should have been sent to me."

A spokesperson for Ysgol John Bright said: "I can confirm that the school is aware of a data breach. We are currently investigating the incident in compliance with our data protection policy."

A spokesperson for Conwy council said: "Conwy's education service has been notified by the school in line with reporting procedures."
