Summit School District is notifying students and current and former employees that their personal information may have been compromised in a network security incident discovered this summer.
The district identified unauthorized activity on its network July 28 and hired outside cybersecurity specialists to investigate, according to a press release issued Wednesday, Oct. 21. In September, the district determined that certain personal information may have been accessed or acquired without authorization.
Potentially affected information includes employee Social Security numbers, as well as student identification numbers, addresses, dates of birth, taxpayer identification numbers and financial information. The district noted that it does not maintain student Social Security numbers.
The district said it has no confirmed reports of identity theft or financial fraud connected to the incident.
In the Oct. 21 news release, the district announced it is mailing notification letters to potentially affected individuals outlining what information may have been compromised and steps residents can take to protect themselves.
The district encourages recipients to review their financial accounts and credit reports for suspicious activity and consider placing free fraud alerts or security freezes on their credit files. Free credit reports are available at AnnualCreditReport.com .
“We understand families and employees trust us with important personal information, and we take that responsibility seriously,” stated Ravi Jaishankar, the district’s director of information and technology, in the news release.
The district has also taken steps to strengthen its network security following the incident.
Anyone with questions can call the district’s dedicated assistance line at 1-833-918-9469, available beginning Thursday, Oct. 22, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
