Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told family members of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea that she solicited U.S. President Donald Trump’s assistance at their September summit to help resolve the issue.
She disclosed that she asked Trump to tell North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to meet with her in an effort to bring the abductees .
She shared this at an Oct. 6 meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office with abductees’ family members and accompanying lawmakers from the Parliamentary League on the Abductions Issue.
The family members and lawmakers also visited the United States last month to seek cooperation on the longstanding issue.
Katsunobu Kato, acting chair of the parliamentary association, told reporters that Takaichi requested that Trump tell Kim to meet with her if another summit between the United States and North Korea is realized.
“We have secured strong support for resolving the abductee issue during the Japan-U.S. summit,” Takaichi said at the beginning of the meeting.
Trump appears to be willing to hold a U.S.-North Korea summit within the year.
Takaichi previously expressed her willigness to solve the issue, saying, “We are determined to resolve the abductee issue without excluding any potential means, including meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.”
