PsiQuantum, from Palo Alto, is building a photonic quantum computer on chips made in a commercial GlobalFoundries fab, with sites in Brisbane and Chicago, and its Construct software for designing algorithms is open to anyone.

PsiQuantum at a glance

PsiQuantum wants to skip the small, experimental machines and go straight to a large, error-corrected quantum computer, what it calls the first utility-scale fault-tolerant quantum computer. Its qubits are particles of light travelling through silicon photonic chips, and those chips are made by GlobalFoundries in standard semiconductor fabs, with the aim of reaching millions of qubits.

The company is based in Palo Alto, California. Victor Peng, the former Xilinx CEO and AMD President, became interim CEO on 10 February 2026 and is now listed by the company as chief executive, while co-founder Jeremy O'Brien moved to executive chairman.

The hardware is built around the Omega chipset, made on 300mm wafers by GlobalFoundries and designed to scale to million-qubit processors. To house the machines, PsiQuantum is building two large sites. In Australia it partnered with the government on an A$620M facility in Brisbane, and Linde Engineering is contracted to deliver the cryogenic plant for the utility-scale machine in Queensland, targeting operational deployment by the end of 2027.

Its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Brisbane added a Test and Characterization lab at Griffith University in 2025, and on 26 May 2026 PsiQuantum opened its Test and Validation Lab at Griffith's Nathan Campus, ahead of the June 2026 groundbreaking at the Moreton Bay Central anchor site. In the US it broke ground in Chicago, Illinois, on what it describes as the largest quantum computing facility in the Americas.

It has advanced to DARPA QBI Stage C, the most advanced stage.

You can try PsiQuantum's software today. Construct, launched in September 2025, is a platform for designing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms, and it is now open access. It maps algorithms onto surface-code error correction and routes qubits across photonic chips using an Active Volume Architecture, which the company's paper estimates lets a 2048-bit factoring algorithm run 44 times faster than on a general-purpose architecture without non-local connections (the press release rounds this to 50x).

Construct includes Circuit Designer, a drag-and-drop tool for drawing and sharing quantum circuits, Resource Analyzer for spotting where an algorithm uses the most resources, and a Python development kit.

PsiQuantum has raised $1.67B or more in private funding, including a $1B Series E at a $7B valuation in 2025, a $450M Series D in 2021 and $215M through Series C. Government funding is counted separately and takes the combined figure past $3B. On 21 May 2026 it signed a non-binding $100 million letter of intent with the US Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act, aimed at domestic manufacturing of photonic quantum computing components including barium titanate optical switches, high-temperature single-photon detectors and advanced packaging.

On 8 September 2026 it signed the definitive documentation for that $100 million award.

Other work includes a $10.8M AFRL contract, a partnership with the National Cancer Center Japan on cancer treatment algorithm research, and collaborations with Airbus and Lockheed Martin on application-specific quantum solutions.

PsiQuantum signed a final CHIPS R&D award of up to $100 million with the US Department of Commerce for electro-optic materials, high-temperature single-photon detectors and photonic packaging. Government awards are not counted in the funding total. quantumzeitgeist.com

Not directly comparable to gate fidelities quoted for trapped-ion or superconducting systems. 99.98% is state preparation and measurement fidelity, not a single-qubit gate fidelity.
