US cloud software company Salesforce to slash

Firstpost • April 13, 2026

Salesforce has announced a restructuring plan that includes cutting approximately 4,000 jobs , a move that comes as the cloud software giant grapples with a significant data breach linked to its third-party ecosystem, as reported by People Matters , an Indian magazine in the human resources space.

The layoffs, primarily targeting customer support and marketing roles, highlight a growing tension between the company’s pivot toward artificial intelligence and the intensifying scrutiny over its security infrastructure.

The workforce reduction follows a high-profile security incident involving Drift , a popular third-party conversational AI tool integrated with the Salesforce platform. According to internal reports, the breach exposed thousands of customer records, raising alarm bells across the enterprise software industry regarding “supply-chain” vulnerabilities.

While Salesforce has clarified that its core systems were not directly compromised, the incident exploited OAuth tokens to gain unauthorised API access. This has fuelled criticism from cybersecurity experts who argue that Salesforce’s vast “AppExchange” marketplace, while a cornerstone of its success, now presents a sprawling attack surface that is increasingly difficult to police.

Beyond security concerns, the layoffs reflect a brutal strategic shift. CEO Marc Benioff has been vocal “rebalancing” the company’s headcount as autonomous AI agents, branded as Agentforce , begin to handle routine customer interactions.

“I reduced my support headcount from 9,000 to 5,000 because I simply need fewer heads to manage the same volume of work,” Benioff remarked during a recent strategy briefing.

The company is effectively replacing traditional human support tiers with AI-driven systems capable of resolving tickets in real-time. This “Agentic displacement” has left thousands of white-collar workers in a volatile position as the company prioritizes profit-per-employee over total workforce size.

Wall Street has reacted with cautious optimism toward the cost-cutting measures, though the timing of the data breach has dampened some enthusiasm. Critics and labour advocates have slammed the move, suggesting that cutting human oversight immediately after a security crisis could lead to further “blind spots” in customer trust.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was ousted after 16 years, with Peter Magyar's Tisza party winning a two-thirds parliamentary majority. Orban's defeat is a major setback for far-right movements globally and weakens his ally, former US President Donald Trump. Magyar has pledged to restore democracy, fight corruption, and improve Hungary's relationship with the European Union.
