Urenco USA's National Enrichment Facility in New Mexico has 4.3 million SWU of capacity today, enough to cover one-third of U.S. enriched uranium demand.
The company says its expansion is ahead of schedule and on budget, with plans to raise enrichment output by more than 50% as reactor demand grows.
Russia controls nearly half of global enrichment capacity, and the World Nuclear Association sees uranium demand up 28% by 2030, which makes domestic supply more urgent.
The only commercial-scale uranium enrichment plant in the United States is now three-quarters of the way through its latest expansion, a milestone for the country's push to build out a domestic nuclear fuel supply chain. Urenco USA said Oct. 8 that the sixth of eight new centrifuge cascades at its National Enrichment Facility in New Mexico has started production, with the seventh due later this year and the last in spring 2027. As the Trump administration works to reestablish the country as the global leader in nuclear energy , cutting reliance on foreign nuclear fuel imports is a priority for the domestic sector.
The National Enrichment Facility, located in Eunice, New Mexico, currently has a capacity of 4.3 million separative work units (SWUs) of enriched uranium and is installing 700,000 SWUs of new capacity through the eight-cascade project. Urenco aims to expand its capacity to more than 7 million SWUs over the decade , including a new plant that would start construction in 2029. At present, the plant fulfills one-third of the country's enriched uranium demand, but that demand is set to increase in coming years as a nuclear renaissance takes hold in the United States and abroad.
After years of plateaued energy demand growth, projections for future energy needs in the United States are skyrocketing, driven by the artificial intelligence boom and data center hyperscalers . In order to meet that demand without completely derailing progress toward the tech sector’s decarbonization pledges, nuclear is emerging as one of the most promising energy development options. Not only is nuclear fission low in greenhouse gas emissions, it produces energy around the clock, making it an especially attractive option for energy security.
However, the country’s reliance on external sources of nuclear fuel could compromise that energy security. Though the United States is the world’s largest producer of nuclear energy, it is not currently a major producer of nuclear fuel. Only five plants in the world operate large-scale uranium conversion today, and nearly half of global enrichment capacity is controlled by Russia, resulting in a major resource bottleneck and significant geopolitical vulnerabilities.
And, making matters worse, prices for uranium are soaring on the global market thanks to a global nuclear energy resurgence. The World Nuclear Association projects that worldwide demand for uranium will climb 28 percent by 2030 and more than double by 2040, leading to increased competition for scarce resources.
As a result, U.S. nuclear energy “faces fuel supply chain vulnerabilities, with tight uranium supplies, geopolitical risks, and rising costs,” threatening both existing reactors and advanced reactor development, according to a January report from Stanford Energy.
For this reason, the recent capacity expansion and planned further developments at the National Enrichment Facility are significant for the United States’ energy autonomy as a whole, and could even help the country move toward being an exporter of enriched uranium, in line with the Trump administration’s ambitions to “ produce lasting American dominance in the global nuclear energy market .”
“We are consistently delivering new capacity to help fuel the U.S. nuclear industry and allied nations, and our teams are doing it ahead of schedule and on budget,” said Jody Blackshear, Managing Director of Urenco USA, the firm behind the National Enrichment Facility, in a recent press release . “This experience will support our larger capacity programs in the years ahead as we look to increase our enrichment production by more than 50% to meet the needs of our customers with traditional and advanced reactors.”
The United States has also made progress in boosting domestic uranium recovery, with the same goal of reducing reliance on global uranium supply chains. In April, Uranium Energy Corp. (NYSE American: UEC) began production at its Burke Hollow project in South Texas, the first new in-situ recovery (ISR) uranium operation in the country in more than a decade. The company calls it the largest greenfield ISR project to enter production in that time. With Burke Hollow online, UEC now has ISR platforms producing in both Texas and Wyoming, and it plans to start up its Ludeman project in Wyoming in 2027.
