Vietnam arrests suspected money laundering group | NHK WORLD
Japan's National Police Agency says Vietnamese authorities using information provided by Japanese police have arrested a group of people suspected of money laundering,
The NPA said the arrested group of seven Vietnamese nationals came under the spotlight during the investigation of a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman who had been arrested and indicted in Japan. The group is suspected of being involved in laundering money obtained through a method known as "voice phishing" from 2024 through last year. The laundered money is reportedly worth 9.5 million dollars.
In voice phishing, the perpetrator impersonates an official of a financial organization with which the potential victim has actual transactions and leads them to a fake website where they are made to provide their account information.
The NPA plans to investigate in coordination with the Vietnamese authorities the likely client of the money laundering group. The client is suspected to have conducted the voice phishing.
