A Lithuanian presidential aide dismissed a new Russian threat to NATO countries over the Kaliningrad region, the 15min news website reported on Tuesday.
"We are informed the new Russian threats, which are completely baseless and seen as a measure of psychological pressure," Deividas Matulionis, national security aide to President Gitanas Nausėda, told 15min.
Matulionis spoke after the Russian embassy in Belgium announced that Moscow was allegedly ready to use its entire weapons arsenal if NATO countries attempted to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of the country.
"We are deeply concerned provocative statements and actions by the North Atlantic Alliance's leadership and NATO member states concerning the Kaliningrad region, which is an integral part of the Russian Federation," the Russian embassy said in a statement.
"We have stressed that Russia has the necessary means to repel possible aggression and is prepared to use its entire available arsenal of weapons to defend its territory if NATO countries attempt to isolate the Kaliningrad region from the rest of our country," the Russian embassy in Belgium said.
NATO confirmed to LRT.lt that it had received an "informal document" (non-paper) from the Russian embassy in Belgium warning Kaliningrad.
"We strongly condemn threats to use force, including any irresponsible rhetoric concerning nuclear weapons. We call on Russia to end its unjustified war against Ukraine," NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart said.
This is not the first time this year that Moscow's propaganda has accused NATO or alliance countries of plans to blockade or occupy Kaliningrad.
