China has activated the world's first three-band optical fibre communication system, enhancing data transmission capabilities significantly. The system, which connects major computing facilities over a 35km link, allows a single fibre to carry more than five times the traffic of conventional systems. It utilizes three transmission windows—S-band, C-band, and L-band—enabling more data to travel through existing infrastructure. The technology is expected to boost the capacity of future AI networks and serves as a commercial test bed for next-generation optical networking technologies. The project team highlighted that the system combines ultra-low-loss transmission capabilities with multi-core fibre technology, overcoming previous technical challenges in the S-band. This advancement is seen as a significant step in optimizing optical communication infrastructure.
