In May 2026, China activated the world's first undersea data center powered directly by offshore wind, located 10 kilometers off Shanghai's Lingang coast. The facility, developed by a subsidiary of China Communications Construction, has a planned capacity of 24 megawatts, sufficient to power around 20,000 households. Currently operating at 2.3 megawatts, the center utilizes subsea photoelectric composite cables for direct power transmission from offshore wind farms, bypassing traditional grid systems. The innovative design employs seawater cooling, reducing electricity consumption by 22.8% and land use by over 90%. This project aims to address the rising energy demands of AI infrastructure while promoting greener solutions. Shanghai's growing AI sector, including autonomous driving and biotech, is expected to benefit from this low-latency, high-density computing model.
