Cybercrime Suspect Dies After Gunfight with EFCC Operatives

Asar Sesugh, an escaped cybercrime suspect, was killed during a confrontation with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Makurdi, Benue State. He was part of a group of 26 suspected cyber fraudsters arrested on April 28, 2026. Sesugh and two others escaped custody on May 4 by exploiting a lavatory break. After evading capture for weeks, intelligence led EFCC operatives to his location on May 21, where he and his associates opened fire. In the ensuing gunfight, Sesugh was found injured and later pronounced dead at a hospital. The EFCC clarified that he did not die in custody and expressed condolences to his family.
