The Council of Europe addressed Türkiye's compliance with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgment regarding property rights linked to displaced persons in Cyprus. Türkiye's proposal to close the property rights discussion was rejected, with 25 member states voting in favor of Cyprus's proposal for an interpretative question to be referred back to the ECtHR. The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed concerns about the politicization of the European human rights system, arguing that the Greek Cypriot side is obstructing effective functioning. The upcoming meeting in June 2027 may activate Article 46.3 of the ECHR, marking a significant moment in the Convention System. Türkiye plans to closely monitor the situation in consultation with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
