Origin Energy, Australia's largest electricity retailer, reported a significant data breach affecting customer data in July 2026. Approximately 60 customers had their full bank account numbers accessed, along with ID document numbers of 100 customers. The breach initially involved claims of data access for around 2 million customers, but the company later clarified the extent of the compromised information. A total of 15,000 customers had data related to government schemes accessed. The breach was disclosed on July 22, and a criminal investigation is currently ongoing. CEO Frank Calabria stated that measures have been implemented to enhance system security to prevent future incidents.
