Education Sector Faces Surge in Cyberattacks Amid Open Network Vulnerabilities

SonicWall's 2026 Education Protect Brief reveals that educational institutions are experiencing the highest per-device cyberattack intensity of any tracked sector, with 81,879 intrusion prevention system (IPS) hits per device in the first half of 2026. The report highlights that SIPVicious VoIP exploitation accounted for 90 million hits, representing 50.5% of all IPS events in education. This surge is attributed to the open nature of educational networks, which must accommodate various devices and services. Additionally, education recorded 16,242 malware hits per device, nearly 3.5 times the rate seen in retail. Vulnerabilities in outdated systems, such as the Hikvision IP camera command injection and Apache Log4j2, continue to pose risks. Active ransomware campaigns were detected in 44 educational organizations, including threats from the Ryuk ransomware family. The findings indicate that attackers are exploiting the significant attack surface presented by educational institutions.
