Educational Institutions Targeted by Sophisticated Email Threats

A Barracuda Networks survey reveals that educational institutions are facing significant cyber risks beyond phishing, with 58.8 million phishing emails detected over three months. The survey involved 2,000 IT and security leaders, including 113 from the education sector. Approximately 77% of educational respondents reported experiencing an email security incident in the past year. Education institutions are four times more likely than the global average to be uncertain about whether they experienced an email security incident. The education sector has the highest rate of ransomware incidents originating from email at 38%, and a 27% rate of account takeovers. Many institutions struggle to investigate and contain incidents promptly, with 18% taking up to a week to restore normal operations. User behavior and human error are cited as significant contributors to incidents, with 53% of respondents identifying them as leading causes.
