Pradeep Kurulkar, a senior scientist at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is set to face trial starting July 2, 2026, after being charged with espionage under the Official Secrets Act. Kurulkar was arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on May 3, 2023, for allegedly sharing sensitive information with a suspected Pakistani intelligence operative. The ATS filed a chargesheet on June 30, 2023, detailing accusations of unauthorized communication of classified data. The trial will be conducted in-camera due to the nature of the materials involved. Special Judge P.Y. Ladekar is overseeing the case, which has seen delays due to Kurulkar's discharge applications and bail proceedings. His bail requests were denied by both the special court and the Bombay High Court. The charges include severe penalties for spying and wrongful communication of information.
