Google announced the discontinuation of the Gemini feature known as 'Gems', which allowed users to create custom AI assistants. Starting November 17, 2026, Gems will be replaced by 'skills', which are reusable custom instructions for automating tasks. The transition will automatically migrate existing Gems to skills, ensuring users retain their custom setups. Skills will enable users to automate repetitive tasks and can be invoked by typing a forward slash followed by the skill name. This change aims to enhance user efficiency by allowing the combination of multiple skills for complex tasks. The rollout of skills is already in progress, with features available globally in Gemini chat. The migration process will continue into 2027 for work and school accounts. The Gems feature will remain operational until the transition date.
