The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is intensifying efforts to combat disinformation campaigns as local government elections approach. The IEC plans to revise the code of conduct for political parties and candidates, implementing stricter measures against misinformation. A recent vote-rigging case involving the MK Party has raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral process. As of late May 2026, over 27 million citizens are registered to vote, but many eligible voters remain unregistered. The IEC aims to enhance voter registration, particularly among the youth, while addressing complaints about cumbersome online verification processes. Deputy chief electoral officer Mashego Sheburi emphasized the role of social media and generative AI in influencing elections. The IEC is expected to publish a draft regulation on disinformation soon.
