Transnational criminal cartels are reportedly using commercial drones to facilitate human trafficking operations across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to military officials. The Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB) has detected 378 drones in the past month, with 95% to 98% linked to reconnaissance for human trafficking. Between August 22 and September 22, there were 75 drone turn-backs, 15 engagements, and one capture. The JTF-SB, activated in early 2025, collaborates with the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to counter these threats. While no lethal drones have been confirmed along the border, concerns exist regarding the potential for such capabilities, especially with lessons learned from conflicts like Russia and Ukraine. The task force has deployed advanced counter-drone systems, including the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL), to address these incursions.
