India has successfully demonstrated its first free-space Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link over 5.56 km, conducted by QNu Labs in collaboration with BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar. The trial established a secure quantum communication channel, achieving a Quantum Bit Error Rate below 5% and generating secure keys at a rate of 230–260 bits per second. The integration of QNu Labs' hardware-based Armos QKD device with BISAG-N's Vedic Kavach platform, which employs post-quantum cryptography, marks a significant advancement in quantum-resilient communication systems. This demonstration is intended to enhance India's secure communication infrastructure against emerging quantum-era security threats. The project aligns with the National Quantum Mission, aiming to extend quantum-secure networks potentially to satellite-based communication in the future.
