On April 22, 2026, Dr. Joachim Nagel, President of the Deutsche Bundesbank, delivered a keynote speech emphasizing the importance of the digital euro in enhancing Europe's strategic autonomy. The digital euro project, initiated by the ECB Governing Council on October 29, 2025, aims to introduce a central bank digital currency (CBDC) to complement cash and improve payment efficiency across the euro area. The digital euro is designed to ensure that central bank money remains accessible in a digital economy, addressing the rising trend of digital payments which accounted for 76% of transactions in 2024. The Eurosystem plans to conduct pilot transactions by mid-2027, with a potential rollout in 2029, pending legal framework adoption.
