Microsoft has made WSL Containers generally available, allowing Linux containers to run on Windows through the Windows Subsystem for Linux. The feature can be installed via 'wsl --update' and includes a command-line tool, wslc.exe, with an alias container.exe. Administrators can control its use through Microsoft Intune, enabling or disabling the feature and restricting image pulls to approved registries. The release adds several commands for managing containers, including health checks and file operations. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint now integrates with WSL Containers, allowing security teams to monitor activity within containers. The performance of accessing Windows files from Linux environments can be up to 2x faster. However, the highly requested Docker Compose support is still in development, with Microsoft aiming to support existing compose.yaml files unchanged. The general availability of WSL Containers marks a significant enhancement in Windows' capabilities for developers and security teams.
