NorSAF, a Latvian company, has partnered with UK-based Nova Pangaea Technologies to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chain in Latvia. The collaboration aims to produce ethanol from locally sourced wood waste using Nova Pangaea's REFNOVA® technology. This initiative is in response to EU regulations mandating a significant increase in SAF usage at airports, from 2% in 2025 to 20% by 2035. The partnership seeks to enhance supply chain resilience by reducing reliance on imported feedstocks, which currently account for 85% of Europe's SAF feedstocks. Janis Kisiels, founder of NorSAF, emphasized the need for a domestic supply chain to secure energy independence. Production at the planned SAF facility is expected to commence in 2031, utilizing advanced technologies to ensure sustainability and carbon negativity.
