Drone Trials Launched to Combat Railway Vandalism and Theft in Romford

Network Rail is initiating drone trials in Romford to address vandalism, cable theft, and trespassing, which are significant causes of train delays in the East of England. The trials will utilize BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) drone technology, approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, to monitor railway infrastructure from up to 400 meters away. Equipped with high-resolution thermal imaging cameras, these drones can detect wear and damage to tracks and equipment before failures occur. The Romford trial is part of a broader strategy to improve incident response and reduce delays, which totaled over 143,000 minutes due to such incidents in the 2025/26 period. The technology aims to enhance coordination among crime response teams and operations. Following the Romford trial, additional sites in the Anglia region will also implement similar drone monitoring. A parallel trial is set to occur at Gloucester on Network Rail’s Western route.
