Russia has commenced offshore oil and gas exploration in North Korea's continental shelf in the Sea of Japan, allocating nearly $13 million for the project. The expedition, led by specialists from the VNIIOkeangeologia institute aboard the Pavel Gordienko vessel, aims to conduct gas-hydro-geochemical surveys from May to June 2026. Another Russian vessel, Ordovik, is also operating near North Korea's coast. The exploration follows a cooperation agreement signed in November 2023 between Moscow and Pyongyang. Experts suggest that this could significantly impact North Korea's resource development, with potential gas and oil deposits identified along its eastern coast. Historical attempts to find oil in the region date back to the Soviet era, but modern technology may yield new insights.
