A Seoul police officer has been detained for allegedly creating and distributing hundreds of AI-generated sexually explicit deepfakes and possessing 5,600 illegal sexual images and videos, including child sexual exploitation material. The officer, assigned to the Dongdaemun Police Station, was arrested following an undercover investigation by the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency into a Telegram chat room where such images were circulated. Forensic analysis of the officer's devices revealed 2,600 deepfake images, 1,600 images of child sexual exploitation, and 1,300 illegally filmed videos. The officer is suspected of producing over 400 AI-generated nude images of acquaintances between March 2022 and July 2026. He had a prior investigation for similar offenses and received a suspended indictment before joining the police force in April 2024. Following the investigation's initiation, the officer was placed on standby and subsequently relieved of his duties. The case highlights the ongoing issues surrounding digital sexual exploitation in South Korea, prompting stricter laws and investigative measures.
