South Africa Launches Scam Signal to Combat Banking Fraud

On February 5, 2026, South Africa introduced Scam Signal, a real-time fraud detection service aimed at combating Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud. This initiative, developed by the GSMA in collaboration with major banks and MTN Chenosis, addresses the rising financial crime that led to losses nearing three billion rand last year. The system is designed to protect consumers by detecting fraudulent transactions in real-time.
