Laura E. Griffin, a 57-year-old woman from Pickerington, Ohio, faces charges for defrauding the Southern Door School District out of nearly $68,000 through a phishing scam. She allegedly submitted two fraudulent invoices in August and October for educational services that were never provided. The district discovered the scam shortly after the payments were made and initiated an investigation with the Door County Sheriff's Office. The funds were traced to Griffin's account, and the district has since recovered the lost amount through insurance, minus a deductible. In response to the incident, the district has enhanced its cybersecurity measures, including updated purchasing training and improved email security. Griffin is scheduled to appear in court on July 27.
