Türkiye's Akkuyu Nuclear Plant Completes Key Fuel Loading Tests

Türkiye's Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant has completed a significant phase in its commissioning process, with mock nuclear fuel assemblies loaded into the reactor pressure vessel of its first unit. The operation, involving 163 mock assemblies, tested the plant's mechanical, hydraulic, and thermal systems, as well as structural durability. Conducted over five days under the supervision of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, this rehearsal is crucial for preparing for actual fuel loading. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the goal is to generate the first electricity by the end of 2026. The plant, built by Russia's Rosatom, is expected to supply 10-15% of Türkiye's electricity demand once fully operational. Construction began in 2018, and the plant has faced delays due to various challenges, including pandemic-related issues and financial hurdles. The project aims to enhance Türkiye's energy mix with zero-emission nuclear power.
