A Dutch developer, Folkert van Heusden, discovered an unpatched Y2K bug in the Network Time Protocol daemon of BSD 2.11 while working on a PDP-11/70 emulator. This bug affects systems that utilize a Precision Standard Time, Inc. receiver to synchronize time via short-wave broadcasts. The issue, which results in a time offset of approximately 17,000 years, is not a significant threat unless specific outdated hardware is still in use. Van Heusden has created a fix for the bug, marking it as one of the last remaining Y2K vulnerabilities. The PDP-11/70, a minicomputer from the 1970s, is rarely used today, limiting the impact of this discovery. The developer's emulator can run on modern hardware like a Raspberry Pi Pico, making it accessible for enthusiasts.
