The UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has successfully demonstrated optical downlink communications from a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite using a deployable ground station developed by Archangel Lightworks. During a 90-second satellite pass, multiple gigabytes of data were downloaded, marking a significant advancement in military communications. This technology, known as laser communications or free space optical communications, allows for high-speed data transmission that is harder to intercept compared to traditional radio frequency methods. The system is designed to be portable, enabling rapid deployment to various operational sites. UK Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard, emphasized the importance of this technology for enhancing the security and speed of military communications, providing a strategic advantage over adversaries. The initiative aligns with the UK's Defence Industrial Strategy and aims to support the armed forces in increasingly contested environments. Archangel Lightworks recently secured over £10 million in funding to further develop this technology.
