Researchers from Modat and the Dutch National Cyber Security Centre identified 8,547 exposed solar and wind energy systems across 35 European countries, with 181 sites allowing full control. Spain and Germany were highlighted as the most vulnerable, with 2,766 exposed solar systems in Spain and 212 at-risk wind systems in Germany. The research revealed that many systems had accessible admin interfaces and control panels, posing significant risks to critical infrastructure. The findings were presented at The ONE Conference in The Hague, emphasizing the urgent need for operators to secure their systems against potential cyberattacks. The researchers used machine-learning techniques to identify these vulnerabilities, which could lead to severe disruptions if exploited. The European Union Agency for Cybersecurity has not yet responded to inquiries regarding these vulnerabilities.
