Zed, a new code editor developed by former Atom team members, has officially launched version 1.0 on May 1, 2026. Built using Rust and featuring a custom GPU-accelerated UI framework, Zed aims to provide a high-performance coding environment. The release includes new features such as bookmarks and Git integration, along with AI capabilities for code predictions. Despite its advancements, Zed currently supports around 1,000 extensions compared to over 100,000 available for VS Code. The editor is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. CEO Nathan Sobo emphasized that while Zed is not perfect, it has reached a point where most developers can effectively use it. The development team has also focused on collaboration, enabling real-time coding with AI agents. Zed's architecture allows for a more responsive user experience compared to traditional editors built on web technologies.
